The Writer's Block is the Southern Cross's group of dedicated fan fiction writers AND those of us who wish to learn more of the art of writing.

Whether it be short stories; scripts; screenplays; recipes or poetry - this is the place for you.

The intention of the Writer's Block is to not only create and publish written (and other) works for both our own and universal enjoyment, but to help others learn new skills within the art of writing. The group corresponds regularly and even though there are physical meetings planned for Adelaide, the inter-action with our fellow inter-state and international members, will always be to the fore.

The Writer's Block will be involved in many areas of fan fiction and will be the fulcrum of the material gathered over time through our Role Playing Group (RPG).

It is even intended that works created within the Writer's Block, will be published in some format - either electronically or in print - for either sale for fund-raising or charity work, or simply for our own enjoyment.

So, if you have a hankering to see your name in print, why not swing by and check this out.

Our active and exciting Role Playing Group (RPG)  provides us with a great way to further extend the fictional side of our star trek fan experience.

With a great cast of characters, you will find us having fun on Starbase Pitcairn, where our role play is set. This starbase is right in the heart of one of the most dangerous quadrants in space and the men and women on board have their hands filled with intrigue; spies; space pirates; unscrupulous traders; Marines; fighter pilots, diplomats and a huge array of nefarious 'other's all up to no good.

The RPG is done via email (almost at your leisure) and our intention is to use the storylines to create and ongoing work of fan fiction (through the Writer's Group - another crew activity on our ship).

There is always room for extra characters - the Starbase has a listed population  numbering in the thousands - so if you like the idea of living out your fantasy as a member of Star trek's far flung universe, why not come along for the ride?

All information pertaining to the RPG, can be provided by the Games master (GM) Chief of Ship's Services, LT Sandy Mutter

Project Seti

SETI at home is a distributed computing project using Internet-connected computers, hosted by the Space Sciences Laboratory, at the University of California, Berkeley, in the United States. SETI is an acronym for the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence. SETI at home was released to the public on May 17, 1999.
The goal of SETI at home is to detect intelligent life outside Earth. SETI at home searches for possible evidence of radio transmissions from extraterrestrial intelligence using data from the Arecibo radio telescope. The software searches for four signals.

The process is somewhat like tuning a radio to various channels, and looking at the signal strength meter. If the strength of the signal goes up, that gets attention. More technically, it involves a lot of digital signal processing, mostly discrete Fourier transforms at various chirp rates and durations.
While the project has not found any conclusive signs of extraterrestrial intelligence, it has identified several candidate spots for further analysis. The most significant candidate signal to date was announced on September 1, 2004, named Radio source SHGb02+14a.
Seth Shostak (2004), a prominent SETI figure, has stated that he expects to get a conclusive signal and proof of alien contact between 2020 and 2025, based on the Drake equation.
With over 5.2 million participants worldwide, the project is the distributed computing project with the most participants to date. Since its launch on May 17, 1999, the project has logged over two million years of aggregate computing time. On September 26, 2001, SETI at home had performed a total of 10 floating point operations. It is acknowledged by the Guinness World Records as the largest computation in history (Newport 2005). With over 900,000 computers in the system, SETI at home has the ability to compute over 250 TFLOPS (as of April 17, 2006). For comparison, Blue Gene (one of the the world's fastest supercomputers) computes 280 TFLOPS. (Source, Seti at home)

Have you ever wondered how many pets are on a Starship and what kind of pets these may be and there names, well wonder no more.

If you have a picture of your pet or pets send them to the Commanding Officer co@uss-southerncross.com write the pets names down and put a description of the pet or what the pet is doing in the picture.

We are in the process of putting a database together of all the crew’s pets and once we have this we will add their pictures and information to the web site.
